The landscape of distributed energy has turned a corner in India. In the first half of 2026 the country recorded 6.6 GW of rooftop solar installation, an impressive 136 percent increase from the 2.8 GW achieved in the same timeframe last year. The second quarter saw an additional 3.8 GW, up 41 percent quarter-on-quarter and double the year-over-year, thus accounting for 41 percent of the total 10 GW. The share of rooftop solar has been estimated to be about 33 percent of national solar energy installations, which was farfetched two years ago.

This is not an increase or a one-off initiative. It is a structural shift in India’s electricity generation and consumption. The government’s ambitious residential rooftop programme, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, has already touched the lives of almost 4.5 lakh households, which is a mere 45% of its planned target of 10 lakh households. Residential additions accounted for 84 percent of rooftop additions and industrial rooftops another 10 percent in Q2 2026.

Multiple industries are impacted when rooftop solar is deployed on a large scale.
