Banana and Banana Products Processing (Banana Puree, Banana Processing, Banana Concentrate, Banana Pulp, Banana Wine, Banana Beer, Banana Chips, Wafers, Banana Powder and Value Added Products)

The banana is an edible fruit – botanically a berry – produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. In some countries, bananas used for cooking may be called plantains, in contrast to dessert bananas. The fruit is variable in size, color and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft flesh rich in starch covered with a rind which may be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe. The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant.

Banana Industry

The banana industry is an important part of the global industrial agro business. Most bananas go into export and international trade for consumption in Western countries. They are grown on banana plantations primarily in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as Central and South America.

Banana powder

Banana powder is a powder made from processed bananas. It is used as a component for production of milk shakes and baby foods. It is also used in the manufacture of various types of cakes and biscuits.

Banana Wafers (Chips)

Banana chips are deep-fried or dried slices of bananas (fruits of herbaceous plants of the genus Musa of the soft, sweet "dessert banana" variety). They can be covered with sugar or honey and have a sweet taste, or they can be fried in oil and spices and have a salty or spicy taste. Banana chips are commonly found in India and Indonesia (as kripik). Variants of banana chips may be covered with chocolate instead. Banana chips are similar to chifle, usually made from firmer, starchier fruit varieties of the genus Musa commercially called plantains or "cooking bananas".

Banana Wine

Banana wine is a fruit wine made exclusively from bananas. It is different from banana beer, which has a long tradition and great cultural significance in East Africa. Blocker et al. wrote a chapter on "Banana Wine" in the book "Alcohol and temperance in modern history: an international encyclopedia", though this is slightly confusing, as they define what is traditionally referred to as banana beer as being banana wine. The data they present on Production Techniques and Social Practices and Rituals relates to the latter and not to what is commonly known as banana wine.

Banana Beer

Banana beer is an alcoholic beverage made from fermentation of mashed bananas. Sorghum, millet or maize flour are added as a source of wild yeast.

Market Outlook

India is the world's largest banana producer with an annual output of 24.8 million tonnes.

Banana exports by country totaled US$11.8 billion in 2016.

Banana is a globally important fruit crop with 97.5 million tons of production. In India it supports livelihood of millions of people with total annual production of 16.91 million tons from 490.70 thousand ha. With national average of 33.5 T/ha. Banana contributes 37% to total fruit production in India.

Banana wine is one of the fastest growing processed products of banana to enter the market in Africa.

Over 90% of bananas produced in India are consumed domestically as fresh fruit. And it is estimated that processing in banana is only to an extent of 2.5% of which about 1.80% is used to process banana chips. The rest is processed into banana puree, banana pulp, banana beer, banana powder and so on.

Banana powder market is expected to witness high growth owing to its high medicinal and nutritional characteristics. Development of ingredients with high health and wellness functionality is one of positive trend supporting the growth of banana powder market. Rapid urbanization along with the changing lifestyle and dietary habits plays a significant role in increasing the demand for banana powder. Consumers are becoming highly health conscious, hence prefer more of natural food ingredients to support a healthy life style. Other factors escalating the demand for banana powder includes continuous new product developments and improved distribution channel that supports the wide availability of banana powder in the market.

Banana powder market is segmented on the basis of application and geography. Based upon application, banana powder market is segmented into food, pharmaceuticals, animal feed, and cosmetics. Food application can be further sub-segmented on the basis of puffed food, infant food, seasonings, instant food, and others. Food is expected to attain relatively higher market share in the banana powder market.

Global Banana Powder Market size is likely to grow at a high CAGR by 2024.
