Are you looking for Startup opportunities? Let me tell you that currently, India is the second largest producer of agriculture products but most of them remain unprocessed. This creates major opportunities, regarding farmer’s income. As per ‘MOFPI Annual Report 2024-25’, agri-food exports amounted to 46.43 billion dollars in the last fiscal year, constituting 11.7% of India’s total country-wide exports. However, 20-25% of produced fruits and vegetables are still being lost due to inefficient storage and preservation.

The most effective way to tackle the losses is through value addition. This is the process of applying value to the raw products by selling them in the form of powders, branded packaged snacks, concentrated extracts, and other higher value goods. Not only does this waste is reduced, but also the considerable profits of domestic and international markets are fully utilized.

Let’s delve into the Startup Opportunities in Processing Fruits, Pulses, Spices and Dairy.

Fruits & Vegetables Conversion: Loss to Premium Quality Produce (Startup Opportunities)

Scale: 330 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables are produced in India on an annual basis. Leading crops are mango, citrus fruits, banana, onion, and tomato.

Losses: 1 in 4 of every farmer harvested fruits and vegetables is lost.

Exports: In the last fiscal year, only 1.15 billion dollars worth of fruits and vegetables were exported, primarily to the region of Africa, Middle-East, and Europe.

Startup opportunities:

  1. Dehydrated powders: onion, garlic, tomato, beetroot.
  2. Fruit concentrates: mango pulp, banana puree, citrus juices.
  3. Healthy snacks: freeze-dried fruits.
  4. Vegetable: ready-to-cook, vacuum-packed.

Why it matters: The shelf-stable, minimal-processed food sector continues to expand. The price of the dehydrated onion powder is 3x the price of the raw onions, showcasing the revenue potential. With the support of MoFPI on strategic cold chains and clusters, new ventures can expand rapidly.

Pulses: Beyond Dal to Protein Powerhouses

The world’s largest pulse producer is India, producing 27+ million tonnes annually.

Gap: India still imports protein isolates, despite the raw materials available.

Trends: Demand is growing in the US, EU, and East Asia for plant-based proteins. The market for pea protein isolate is growing at double-digit CAGR.

Startup opportunities:

  • Gluten-free pulse flours.
  • Pea, chickpea, and lentil protein isolates.
  • Lentil packs: ready-to-cook.
  • Innovative snacks: roasted chickpeas and lentil protein bars.

Why it matters: These new ventures can reduce imports while building ed ventures. These ventures gain exports with government support (PLISFPI).

Start-up Opportunities in Processing Fruits, Pulses, Spices and Dairy

Startup Opportunities: Spices & Natural Extracts: From Indian Tradition to Global Ingredients

Scale: In FY 2023–24, India exported spices worth US 4.7 billion.

Position: India is the largest producer and exporter of spices, with over 1,0000 spices that can be used.

Demand: Global demand for oleoresins, essential oils, and herbal extracts for use in food, pharma, and cosmetics is increasing.

Startup opportunities:

  • Spice powders and seasoning mixes
  • Spices targeted toward the European and American markets
  • Oleoresins and essential oils
  • Herbal infusions (turmeric lattes, masala teas)

Why it matters: The global functional foods and natural extracts markets are thriving. Although the margins on exporting raw spices are much lower than exporting processed spices, spices are in abundant supply in India. The ODOP (One District, One Product) initiative supports new firms, making higher value product manufacturing within reach.

Production: India has the largest production of milk in the world, with outputs of about 230 million tonnes annually.

Exports: Currently sitting at 625 million USD which shows the revenue potentials.

Demand: The demand is high for whey protein, lactose-free powders, and artisanal cheeses.

Why it matters: By positioning India as a center for dairy exports, the growing demand for fitness and surplus milk can be utilized. Support is provided for dairy exports to India from the Ministry of Food Processing Industry.

Startup Opportunities: Other High Growth Potential Segments

Products from bees: Organic honey and propolis, beeswax for cosmetics and candles.
Cocoa and chocolates: Artisanal Indian chocolate and the domestic processing of cocoa.
Traditional sweeteners: Organic palm sugar and jaggery, and other natural sweeteners.

Analyzing Import-Export Gaps as Opportunities for Startups

Gaps that can be filled with profitable startups can be understood through the high cost incurred by India on food imports.

  1. Edible Oils: Imports at USD 15 Billion → Sunflower, Soybean, and Mustard oil refining and processing
  2. Cocoa: Imports at USD 513 Million → Cultivation of Cocoa and the Creation of Indian Chocolate Brands
  3. Beverages: Imports at USD 1.5 Billion → Innovation in Fruit Wines, Craft Beverages, and Vinegar

Government Initiatives

  • PMKSY: Cold chains, Mega Food Parks, and Agro-processing Clusters
  • PMFME: 2 lakh micro-enterprises with 35% subsidies
  • PLISFPI: Processed food exports to repay production
  • Nivesh Bandhu: Enables real-time data on constellation, raw material, and investment.
