Food Processing

Food Processing could be defined as the process of transforming of food items into usable forms. It might include the processing of raw material through various chemical and physical process into food. Beverages

Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Non-alcoholic beverages refers to non-intoxication drinks or sweet carbonated drinks, which doesn’t have any liquor percentage or in other words yeast is not introduced to convert sugar into alcohol during the fermentation process.

Alcoholic Beverages: These are portable liquid which contain 1% to 75% of liquor. They are produced by the introduction of yeast for fermentation into substance such as Grapes, Grains, Barley, Fruits, Sugarcane and Rice.

Some examples of Alcoholic beverages are Wine, Champagne, Beer, Whiskey, Brandy, Aperitif, Degestive, Liqueur, Spirits, Sake, Rice Wine and Cocktails.

 

Market Outlook

India is expected to become the fifth largest consumer market in the world by 2025.

The food processing industry in India has a total turnover of around USD 65 billion which includes value added products of around USD 20.6 billion.

The Indian food processing industry accounts for 32% of the country’s total food market. Estimated to be worth USD 121 billion, it is one of the largest industries in India, and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption and exports. The industry employs 13 million people directly and 35 million people indirectly. It accounts for 14% of manufacturing GDP, nearly 13% of India’s exports and 6% of total industrial investment. India’s food and beverages (F&B) industry will expand at an average annual pace of 24% to reach Rs.3.8 trillion in sales by the year ending 31 March 2017.

Indians spend about half of their total consumption expenditure on food.

The beverage industry, excluding alcoholic beverages, is worth about $16 billion.

The beverage industry in India constitutes of around USD 230 million among the USD 65 billion food processing industry.

The non-alcoholic beverage industry in India stood at US$2.5 billion in 2015.  The market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of over 17% in between the period from 2016 to 2020 to reach US$4.9 billion by 2020.
