Uttarakhand earns maximum revenue from tourism. Agriculture also plays a major role. Basmati rice, wheat, soybeans, groundnuts, coarse cereals, pulses, apples, oranges, pears, peaches, litchis, and oil seeds are the most widely grown crops in the state. There is prospective development in IT, ITES, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and automobile industries. The service sector of Uttarakhand mainly includes tourism, information technology, higher education, and banking. Real estate also has become a happening sector in Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand is famous for paper mills. Businesses like mineral water plant, wooden furniture plant, tea and other cash crops plantation, dairy farms, milk processing industries can be set up easily because of the close proximity of hill areas.
The average size of Uttarakhand's small and medium businesses is around Rs 4 lakh in annual turnover. And there are about 42,000 of them, most of which exist in scattered clusters of hotels, resorts, tourist services, food processing units and automobile workshops.
The worst hit businesses belong to Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Tehri, Pauri, Almora and Pithoragarh districts. In Pithoragarh alone, over 1,000 small weaving units have been wiped out. More than 43,000 people have lost their livelihoods.
