In Manipur the Handloom Industry has been playing a pivotal role inthe economic since times immemorial.

Handicrafts Industry:  The handicrafts sector is important for the Indianeconomy as it is one of the largest employment generators and accounts for asignificant share in the country’s exports. Manipur, one of the eight states ofthe northeast India known as “eight-sister state”, literally means the‘jewelled land’.

FoodProcessing Industry:   TheDirectorate of Commerce & Industries is functioning as Nodal Agency of FoodProcessing Industries in Manipur since 1992. The food processing industry is amajor thrust area in the state of Manipur as it plays a significant role indiversification and commercialization of agriculture, horticulture, fisheries,poultry, animal husbandry and forest resources.

BambooIndustry:   Bamboo is one of the most abundant and environmental-friendly andsustainable resources available in NE Region, which is not being used to itsfull potential. Bamboos, which are widespread in Manipur, offer numerousopportunities in this regard, and there is much potential for expandingit. In view of commercial cultivation and economic utilisation of bambooas a substitute for the fast depleting timber resources, a comprehensiveprogramme of bamboo for sectional upgradation, enhancement of employmentopportunities for artisans, promotion of value-addition through better andwell designed product development, optimum propagation and conservation anddiversifying production and processing activities through organizedcommunity action has been taken up.
