Dye is a natural/synthetic substance that finds application for adding a color/altering existing color shade. As a coloring material, dyes are used to color commodities of day to day use and can be applied everywhere including

• Plastic toys for children

• Fabrics worn

• From products like food

• Wood items

Pigments are generally coloured, organic or inorganic solid powder, and usually are insoluble. They are not affected physically or chemically in the substrate in which they are incorporated. Pigments can give a full range of colours. Pigments have a variety of applications that includes plastics, ink, and coating applications.

Beta-Naphthol

Beta-Naphthol is the most important dye-intermediate which is employed in the manufacture of other prominent intermediates, which in turn are used commercially in the production of a large number of dyes and fine chemicals. It is colourless crystalline solid and it is soluble in alkali but sparingly soluble in water 

Vat Dyes

The vats in general had the reputation of being deficient in both brilliance and tinctorial strength when used as pigments. The major problem with vat dyes is that they are not easily dispersible in the substrate and hence no tinctorial value. It was mainly Harmon colours in the United States. Who did some very valuable pioneering work in this direction
