Fusion bond epoxy coating, also known as powder coating or FBE coating, is an epoxy-based powder coating widely used to protect steel pipe used in pipeline construction, piping connections and valves from corrosion. They come under the category of 'protective coatings' in paints and coating nomenclature.
Fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) coating is a powder coating broadly used to provide protection to pipelines, steel pipes and a wide range of piping bonds. FBE coatings are thermoset polymers by nature.
Fusion bond epoxy is an environmentally-safe thermosetting coating that is sprayed onto the pipe surface after it has been cleaned and heated to over 450ºF. The epoxy powder melts onto the steel surface and fuses to the pipe, creating a hard barrier. This coating drastically reduces the amount of current required for cathodic protection to prevent corrosion.
