Description:

A concrete sleeper is a type of railway sleeper made out of steel reinforced concrete.

Concrete is good in resisting compressive stress but is very weak in resiting tensile stresses. Hence reinforcement is provided in the concrete wherever tensile stress is expected. Since elastic modulus of steel is quite high compared to concrete, the force developed in steel is high. A cage of reinforcements is prepared as per the design requirements, kept in the form work and then green concrete is poured. After the concrete hardens, the form work is removed. The composite material of steel and concrete, now called R.C.C. acts as a structural member and can resist tensile as well as compressive forces efficiently. 

R.C.C (Reinforced Cement Concrete) and prestressed concrete sleepers are now replacing other types of sleepers except in some special circumstances like bridges etc. where wooden sleepers are used.

Advantages of  R.C.C. Sleepers

•Concrete sleepers have long life, generally 40 to 60 years.

•These are free from natural decay and attack by insects’ etc.

•These sleepers require less fittings.

•Track circuiting is possible in these sleepers.

•These sleepers provide more lateral and longitudinal rigidity as compared to other sleepers.

•The maintenance cost is low.

•Due to higher elastic modulus, these can withstand the stresses due to fast moving trains.
