Introduction
SouthAfrica is the southernmost country in Africa. It is bounded on the south by2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the SouthAtlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighboring countries ofNamibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland,and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. Unlike most other countries around theworld, South Africa has not one but three capital cities. More precisely, thegovernment branches are divided among three major South African cities:Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein. South Africa is the second largesteconomy in Africa.
BUSINESS SECTORS
Agriculture
SouthAfrica has a dual agricultural economy, with both well-developed commercialfarming and more subsistence-based production in the deep rural areas. Agriculturalactivities range from intensive crop production and mixed farming in winterrainfall and high summer rainfall areas to cattle ranching in the bushveld andsheep farming in the arid regions. Maize is most widely grown, followed bywheat, sugar cane and sunflowers. Citrus and deciduous fruits are exported, asare locally produced wines and flowers. There has also been morediversification in terms of products such as soybeans. These are in high demandglobally and investment is increasing to support production.
Forestry and Fisheries
TheDepartment of Forestry and Fisheries is one of the departments of the SouthAfrican government. It is responsible for overseeing and supporting SouthAfrica's agricultural sector, as well as ensuring access to sufficient, safeand nutritious food by the country's population. The main challenge infisheries is to create a balance between maximizing the social and economicpotential of the fisheries industry; protecting the integrity and quality ofthe country's marine and coastal ecosystems and addressing transformation inthe sector. The long-term success of South Africa’s fishing industry andcoastal fishing communities is inextricably linked to our ability to implementsustainable solutions to these challenges through responsible and collaborativemanagement.
Tourism
SouthAfrica's scenic beauty, magnificent outdoors, sunny climate, cultural diversityand reputation for delivering value for money have made it one of the world'sfastest growing leisure – and business – travel destinations. The tourismindustry continues to play an important role in the South African economy. Growingat three times the world average, tourism has become one of the most importantsectors in South Africa following the end of apartheid, creating almost amillion jobs and even overtaking gold exports as an earner of foreign currency.South Africa is one of the top leisure destinations in the world. With its richdiversity and culture, and picture perfect scenery, our country has a lot tooffer avid travelers.
Mining and Mineral
Miningin South Africa has been the main driving force behind the history anddevelopment of Africa's most advanced and richest economy, after Nigeria. Theindustry remains the biggest contributor to the country's gross domesticproduct. The mining industry has embraced a new way of doing business. "Organizationshave entered a new era of doing business in communities to whom products andservices are sold and on whom mining companies depend for future sustainabilityand profitability. The future of mining in the country largely depends on thesuccessful implementation of skills development initiatives. With SouthAfrica’s economy built on gold and diamond mining, the sector is an importantforeign exchange earner, with gold accounting for more than one-third ofexports.
Energy Sector
Energydevelopment is a field of endeavor focused on making available sufficientprimary energy sources and secondary energy forms to meet the needs of society.The South African energy sector has been, and continues to be, at the centre ofthe country’s development. The energy sector has supported major investments inheavy industry and mining, which shape the economic and energy structure of thecountry. Much of the manufacturing sector is also linked to mining activitiesthrough minerals beneficiation and metals production. All of these activitiesare energy-intensive, relying on the availability of coal for electricityproduction.
