Sodium carboxy Methyl cellulose commonly known as CMC and is derived by reaction of alkali cellulose and sodium chloroacetate. CMC is insoluble in organic liquid and is water soluble, available in powder or granules form. It is mainly used in detergent, paints, oil drilling, food industry, textile industry, cosmetics, paper etc. The importance of CMC thus can be gauged from the very fast that it has versatile utility and is used in a variety of products.
