Since the green revolution in the 1960s, India's Food Processing Sector (FPS) has gone a long way. The industry has evolved to meet the rapidly changing wants and lifestyles of Indian consumers. The industry may now serve both urban and rural customers. The FPS now caters to metropolitan markets that consume highly processed goods like ready-to-eat and frozen meals, as well as rural markets that require high-quality basic food grains. Several factors have contributed to the industry's growth.

The establishment of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI), which nurtured and supervised the industry's expansion in India, as well as streamlined and brought together numerous stakeholders in the value chain, was a crucial factor. Streamlining the sector has made a significant contribution to the country's overall economic growth. In FY17, the food processing industry contributed more than 8% of India's GDP through manufacturing, according to the IBEF.

Major drivers of growth

Greater urbanization, increasing disposable incomes, changing spending patterns/priorities, the advent of nuclear families, and the growing desire for convenience foods in dual-income nuclear households are all factors contributing to the dramatic increase in processed food demand.

The subsectors of this business have had varying levels of growth, based on their maturity, alignment with requirements that have evolved in recent years, and the push provided by the Indian government.

• When compared to other industries, consumer foods, which comprise packaged foods, health beverages, meat and poultry, packaged drinking water, aerated drinks, and alcoholic beverages, have shown extraordinary development.

• In other industries, such as dairy, foreign players have been critical to long-term success.

Government Support and Policies

While the Indian FPS is expanding rapidly, it is still in its early stages, with fewer than 5% of the food produced being processed today. The government will launch a redesigned National Food Processing Mission called SAMPADA to meet the goal of the National Food Processing Policy, which is to position India as a World Food Factory (Scheme for Agro-Marine Produce Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters)

• It's a full solution for building a modern infrastructure with effective supply chain management from the farmer to the customer's final point of purchase.

• This project is expected to strengthen the integrated cold chain sector while also adding value to existing infrastructure. The purpose is to provide infrastructure for agro-processing clusters while also assisting in the construction of forwarding and backward connections from the retail market to the farm gate.

• The SAMPADA mission, which will cost USD 900 million, will integrate existing and new schemes in the FPS. The mission will be implemented throughout the fiscal year 2019-20.

Opportunities in Food Processing Sector

Consumers in India are rapidly altering their food habits. On-the-go eating, snacking in between meals, converting to healthier eating alternatives, pre-cooked ready-to-eat meals, and increased consumption of organic foods are all on the rise. This has created a slew of new consumer food prospects for both domestic and international corporations looking to gain a foothold in the fast-growing processed food market.

Even though various companies are entering the market, the industry remains largely untouched due to low per capita consumption and the drastic changes in the Indian lifestyle.

Because of its strategic location, which connects to numerous export market destinations, India is also being promoted and fostered to become a worldwide outsourcing powerhouse for food processing. The infrastructure available to develop Agri Export Zones (AEZ) in the country has steadily improved.

· The MFPI has supported the development of several Mega Food Park initiatives in recent years. More than 40 Mega Food Parks (MFP) have been developed as part of the ‘Make in India' program, which has also supplied the necessary infrastructure to quickly operationalize new businesses. The government has so far invested more than USD 2 billion in this FPS effort.

Bottom Line

To summarise, India's food processing sector is an appealing investment opportunity for new domestic and international firms. Processed food demand will rise substantially over the next decade as a result of steady economic expansion, growing income levels, and changing lifestyles.

Companies with access to this sector's technological and market know-how should take advantage of this lucrative opportunity today.
