TEV Study & Detailed Project Report (DPR) on Zinc Sulphate

The synthesis of zinc sulphate, which is widely used as a dietary supplement, an animal feed additive, and a fertiliser, is the subject of this TEV study and detailed project report (DPR). With the chemical formula znso4, zinc sulphate is a white, crystalline powder that is soluble in water. It is produced through the exothermic reaction of zinc with sulfuric acid, which releases heat and hydrogen gas. The production of zinc sulphate will be thoroughly examined in this study, along with its raw ingredients, manufacturing procedure, machinery, and expenses.

Market Snapshot

In order to remedy the zinc deficiency in the soil, zinc sulphate is a common fertiliser used in agriculture. As zinc is a crucial micronutrient needed for a variety of physiological processes, it is also utilised as a dietary supplement for both humans and animals. From 2021 to 2028, the market for zinc sulphate is projected to increase at a CAGR of 5.4%, from an estimated size of $441.8 million in 2020. The need to increase crop yields, meet the rising food demand, and take into account the expanding population all contribute to the demand for zinc sulphate.

Raw Materials

Zinc ash and sulfuric acid are the two main raw materials needed to make zinc sulphate. Zinc ash is a byproduct of the galvanising process and is acquired from there. It is a good source of zinc and contains about 60% of it. Sulfuric acid, which is sold in a variety of strengths, is a necessary ingredient in the synthesis of zinc sulphate.

Production Process

The following steps are involved in the production of zinc sulphate:

Step 1: Pre-Treatment of Zinc Ash

Pre-treating zinc ash to get rid of contaminants like iron, lead, and cadmium is the first step. In order to remove the contaminants, sulfuric acid is added to the zinc ash mixture along with water. To produce a pure zinc solution, the resulting solution is filtered to get rid of the contaminants.

Step 2: Neutralization

The neutralized zinc solution is then mixed with sulfuric acid to get the pH level to about 5. Zinc sulphate and water are produced during the neutralization reaction.

Zn + H2SO4 → Znso4 + H2O

Step 3: Crystallization

To encourage crystallisation, the zinc sulphate solution is then evaporated to a particular concentration. The zinc sulphate crystals are precipitated by cooling the solution, and they are subsequently filtered out of the liquid.

Step 4: Drying

The remaining moisture is then dried out of the zinc sulphate crystals to produce a pure, white crystalline powder.

Equipment

The following items are among the machinery needed to produce zinc sulphate:

Reaction Vessel: This device is used to neutralise the purified zinc solution and pre-treat zinc ash.

Evaporator: To encourage crystallisation, it is used to concentrate the zinc sulphate solution.

Filtration Press: Crystals of zinc sulphate are extracted from the liquid using it.

Dryer: It is used to dry out any moisture that could still be present in the zinc sulphate crystals.

Costs: The price of raw materials, labour rates, equipment costs, and overhead are some of the variables that affect the price of producing zinc sulphate.
