Introduction to Synthetic Tartaric Acid:
The term synthetic tartaric acid refers to man-made tartaric acid, which is created by hydrolyzing a particular kind of plant matter. It is a white crystalline powder that has a strong sour taste with refreshing aroma. A typical quality of synthetic tartaric acid is low hygroscopicity, so it can be dissolved in cold water or alcohol and make vinegar or wine without haze phenomenon, but natural tartaric acid does not have these advantages.

In addition, its melting point is high (around 220°C), and therefore it doesn’t easily react with other substances. As a result, it is often used as an additive for food products like candy, soft drinks, jams and jellies; also as a preservative for pharmaceuticals like antibiotics, vitamins etc. In fact, almost all kinds of things that need to prevent moisture absorption use synthetic tartaric acid as an additive.

Uses and Applications of Synthetic Tartaric Acid:
Synthetic tartaric acid is used in a wide variety of chemical products, including rubber and plastics, detergents and dyes. Other applications include medications and cleaners. Synthetic tartaric acid is an organic acid found naturally in many plants and foods.
It may also be manufactured from natural gas or petroleum or produced by microbial fermentation of carbohydrates such as glucose and sucrose. Synthetic tartaric acid has been approved for use in food processing by regulatory agencies around the world.

It is used to adjust acidity levels in beverages and processed foods. Synthetic tartaric acid can be used to clean wine casks prior to bottling, for example, or it can be added to soft drinks for flavor enhancement.
In pharmaceuticals, it is used to make tartrates that are used in some over-the-counter medicines. In cleaning products, synthetic tartaric acid helps prevent mildew and corrosion on surfaces. It is also widely used in personal care products such as hair conditioners and skin lotions.

Manufacturing Process of Synthetic Tartaric Acid:
This is an example of a non-standard synthesis.
First, maleic anhydrates (MA) and sulfuric acid are co-fed into a highly exothermic reaction to produce 3, 4-dimethylene dioxy benzoic acid as shown in figure
2. Hydrogen peroxide is then added to protonate dibenzoate ring at 3 to 4 position thus giving alpha-3, 4 dimethylene succinic acid as shown in figure
3. The product can be isolated by distillation or by extraction with suitable solvent like ether or hexane.
The product can be further purified by crystallization using solvents like diethyl ether or hexane. The final pure material is isolated from solvent and dried under vacuum conditions to get pure synthetic tartaric acid derivative.
